Sir,
I have the honour to submit the following report on the selection of a site for a High Power Wireless Telegraphy Station at Hong Kong. As no instructions have been issued with regard to the selection of this particular site, the same instructions that were issued for the selection of the site at
These Singapore are presumed to hold good in this case. instructions state that the Station would be one of a reliable day range of 2,000 miles, and enclosed in an area of 1,500 by 600 if possible.
2.- The question of erecting such a station on the summit of long Kong Island has been considered, but for the following reasons it would appear altogether inadvisable to
do so :-
(i) In the first place the earth surface would form an extremely bad conductor, as rock is met with within a few inches of the surface all over the Island. This difficulty might be overcome by making an artificial earth of wire or wire netting, but consequent on the large area of earth surface required, the expense thereby incurred would be
very considerable.
(ii) During the typhoon season the aerial could not be expected to withstand the force of the wind, even if a typhoon did not actually pass through the Colony. For this reason arrangements would have to be made to lower the
aerial
